One Icky Thing a Day
My father had a rule about chores:
Work in the Morning, Play in the Afternoon.
Turns out it is a marvelous motto for business too! If you get the yucky stuff out of the way, the rest of the day is much more enjoyable!
The cool thing is, you only have to do ONE task, first thing, each day, to pare down a nasty list of horrid tasks. Just one! If you do the yucky stuff a little each day, it all comes under control.
Our nature is to do the easy stuff, letting the horrid stuff pile up. Pa had a name for that... He called it "high grading". He was a logger, and knew that some people would pick out the high grade lumber, and leave the culls for someone else to deal with. He didn't think much of that.
I picked berries as a child, and we had a name for it too. We called it "big berrying". Run down the row picking all the big fruit that was easy to get, and leave all the little ones. Problem with that is that eventually the row boss sent you back to get all those little ones, and your afternoon was not NEARLY so easy as the morning had been!
Nibbling away at the yucky stuff can spread out the hard tasks, so that they don't pile up to ruin whole days or weeks. It is a strategy that is simple, but which possesses incredible power!
If you just do one horrid task first thing, then you can actually run out of horrid tasks! Imagine a day with just the good stuff, the stuff you like to do, and NO GUILT!
Try it... And watch a miracle happen!
